British Grand Prix History at Silverstone
The British Grand Prix is firmly on the map in the calendar of the FIA Formula One World Championship. It has earned a reputation for one of the most glamorous sporting events and over the years the Silverstone circuit has seen some epic racing.
The British and Italian Grands Prix are in fact the oldest continuously staged Formula One world championship Grands Prix. Grand Prix motor racing of this nature was first introduced in Britain at the legendary Brooklands course by Henry Segrave in 1926.
The first ever Grand Prix in Britain was won by Louis Wagner’s French team and Robert Senechal driving a Delage 155B.
Silverstone has played regular host to the race ever since the beginning of the F1 championship back in 1950 and every year since 1987. In between, the venue has alternated with Brands Hatch and Aintree.
It is no secret that the future of the race has been enveloped in controversy in recent years. Nonetheless, the British Grand Prix at Silverstone is still one of the leading motor racing events in the world.
2007 saw glory for the young star driver, Lewis Hamilton and for 2011 all eyes are sure to be on both him and fellow British driver, Jensen Button. Could this be an epic home win for Hamilton or Button, following in the footsteps of racing greats like Nigel Mansell, Damon Hill, Stirling Moss, James Hunt and Sir Jackie Stewart to name but a few?
